This species, a symbol of the Mojave Desert's unique biodiversity, was designated as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 on April 2, 1990, due to significant declines in population and habitat threats.

Protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act prohibits harassment, collection, or harm to these tortoises, enforcing penalties up to $50,000 in fines and one year of imprisonment per violation.
